Course description

The Master's programme in Finance delivers broad business knowledge and specialised expertise in both financial management and investment analysis - first-rate preparation for students seeking a career at the top of the world of finance.

Taught by lecturers from Tilburg University's Department of Finance, home to some of the world's most renowned and cited academics, the program offers the latest thinking across the essentials of investments and corporate finance. Learn how to determine a firm's cost of capital, plan mergers and acquisitions, bring companies to the stock exchange, restructure corporations, make portfolio investment decisions, quantify risks, and hedge them using various derivative instruments.

The course will offer you:

  • A solid foundation in the principles - and practice - of finance. Learn the latest theoretical concepts from scientific literature and apply them to real-world cases during assignments and in-class discussions.
  • Teaching by some of the world's pre-eminent finance academics, faculty members from the Department of Finance at Tilburg University.
  • Scope to customise your degree. Choose between in total 10 electives, and become a specialist in either corporate finance or investments. Follow the CFA track and get the best preparation for the Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) level-1 exam. Or follow the Pensions, Aging and Retirement track.
  • Research-Based Learning; Teaching at Tilburg University is research-based and research-driven. This means you will learn how to conduct research and how to apply it. You will be provided with the skills and attitude needed to work independently and think analytically - important skills for your future career.
  • Excellent career prospects in the financial industry both on a national and international level with future careers including that of chief financial officer (CFO), financial planner, treasurer, portfolio manager, risk manager, or investment adviser.

Track Chartered Financial Analyst

Tilburg University is programme partner of the CFA Institute, the global association for investment professionals. This institute awards the prestigious Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) designation and offers a range of educational opportunities within the Master's programme in Accounting and the Master's programme in Finance.

Within the Master's programme in Finance it is possible to follow the CFA track. This implies that the courses within this track cover at least 70% of the CFA Programme Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK). Students within the CFA track will be exposed to the concepts and principles that investment professionals around the world have deemed integral to global practice. The CFA program partnership signals to you and the marketplace that our MSc is closely tied to professional practice, and that the courses within the track are an excellent preparation for the CFA exams.

In addition, you receive CFA ethics training, you can participate in joint events with the Dutch CFA Society and you are eligible for a CFA level I exam scholarship.

Track Pensions, Aging and Retirement

Coping with an aging population is one of the biggest challenges for the next decades, creating an urgent demand for professionals with the expertise to offer informed solutions. The track Pensions, Aging and Retirement within the Master's programme in Finance will give you an in-depth insight in the many financial issues related to an aging society. Topics of particular interest include asset allocation over the life cycle, risk management of pension funds, new long-term investment products, such as annuities and inflation-linked bonds, and longevity risk, amongst many others. This track offers you a qualification that leads to a host of different career options in the public and private sector, thanks to the growing demand for specialists with in-depth knowledge of the financial issues pertaining to aging societies.
