Arnhem

Arnhem is the capital of the province of Gelderland, located in the eastern part of The Netherlands. The city has about 150,000 inhabitants.

The old city centre got mostly destroyed in the Second World War during Operation Market Garden. In September 1944 fierce fighting between the Allied forces (British and Polish forces) and the German occupier took place to secure the bridge across the Lower Rhine river at Arnhem.

The Dutch city will offer you not only a lot of history and attractions like the Groote Kerk and National Heritage Open Air Museum, it also provides with various activities for your spare time. Arnhem may seem like a sleepy town during the day, but still boasts several bars and clubs for excellent evening entertainment. There are also a number of restaurants and cafes on Jansplein, a small square dominated by the octagonal Koepelkerk.

Additionally the city has a main railway station – Arnhem railway station, which is serviced by several intercity lines and the ICE to Düsseldorf and further on to Frankfurt. Nowadays there are also trains departing all the way to Moscow, by NS HiSpeed. The intercity lines provide direct connections to Utrecht, Nijmegen, and Zutphen. Moreover the city is unique in the Netherlands with its trolleybus system.
