Smart Systems Engineering
Programme introduction
Smart Systems Engineering is an exciting master’s programme that teaches you to develop new ways to use sensor data. You will be able to move beyond generating data to analysing and understanding what these data tell you in real time. Analysing the data allows you to make smart systems work that evaluate a situation, decide on a reaction and finally initiate smart interventions in response to changes in the environment. This master’s programme will challenge you to always look beyond what is known to be possible.
In our master’s programme you’ll concentrate on finding relevant information and services in real-time data, moving from a proof of concept to developing prototypes. You will work closely with fellow master students from all over the world, forming a tight, committed community. A dedicated staff of experienced lecturers and professionals in their field are ready to push you ahead: teaching you new skills and supporting and stimulating you to make the most of your time at our institute.
Course structure
The first part of the master’s programme gives you general knowledge about sensor applications. You will learn how to set up a sensor data system and how to analyse real-time data and data streams to make it smart. Course examples are “Applied Machine Learning”, “Adaptive Filtering” and “Data centric architectures”. Furthermore, you can choose your specialisation direction and gain insight into the application of those smart systems in the health, energy or another high tech sector.
Also, an important part of the programme are courses like ‘Professional Skills’, ‘Research Skills’ and ‘Ethics in Engineering’ which prepare you for the professional field. In the second part you will focus on a research project at innovative companies or research institutes of your choice, possibly Philips or the University Medical Center in Groningen (UMCG).
How to apply
This programme is open to anyone with a Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject.
