Painting
Programme introduction
During this programme, you will spend a lot of time during this programme on viewpoints of past, present and future and on the relations between perception and cognition, image and language, stable and unstable media, old and new technology, art and science. You will also learn about local and global forms of society. Together with the other students you will explore charted and uncharted territories, sharing views and ideas and learning from each other. You will find yourself in the company of students who come from different countries and cultures and various backgrounds. What you all share is a fascination for painting. You wish to bring your art work to a higher level. Together you will develop a critical view of the world and influence as an artist. This will help you to foster your artistic vision as well as your understanding of the impact of your work on society. You will grow as an individual painter as well as an artistic professional in a society that is rapidly changing.
Course structure
Study programme Painting has a two-year curriculum. The first year you will focus on exploring your possibilities in your chosen field. You will carry out your own research and studio work in our Hybrid Arts Lab. We will challenge you to explore how you can innovate and renew your own work, encouraging you to cross borders and see beyond the boundaries you are used to. This is also a year of reflection: you will learn to see your own work and that of the other students in another light.
During your first year, you will extend your knowledge of and insight into the way disciplines are related during your Research & Media Theory classes. There is also time for individual or collective visits to relevant institutions, festivals and research centres.
The second year is focused on your graduation research project. You will still go to classes, but not as often as in your first year. Encouraged by your supervisors you will carry out your own research project and write your thesis. There will be plenty of opportunities to share your work with others and reflect on what it is you want to do.
At the start of your second year, you will have an idea of what you really want to achieve during this master. You have compiled your individual research plan, which you will carry out in the second year, leading to your master thesis.
Your graduation consists of a graduation work and a master thesis, showing your analytical skills, critical view and ability to reflect on your own work and that of others. You will also show your research skills. During public graduation you will present your artistic work and your master thesis.
