Programme introduction
Our Jazz Programme "New York Comes to Groningen" is unique in the world for two reasons:
- Besides the strong Groningen staff, 15 top New York artists travel to Groningen on a rotating schedule. Each week of the year, one of them is teaching from Monday to Friday.
- All students (Bachelor and Master) work with all of the New York artists, irrespective of the student's instrument. Courses include theory, ear training, composing, arranging and a wide variety of workshops. In addition, there are ongoing weekly instructions from a world-class Dutch faculty. All classes are taught in English.
Programme structure
You start performing publicly from day one. The emphasis is on expanding your stage experience. You will also learn to play the piano in order to understand musical theories better. You participate in studio projects and you follow courses in jazz arranging and composition. Your main instrument and the New York faculty classes are the focus throughout your entire study programme.
In addition to your private lessons, you play in various ensembles. We also organise a trip to New York every year. The didactical subjects and musical entrepreneurship are offered in the second and third year during which work placements play a major role. At the end of the fourth year, you will complete your studies with a final concert, displaying the musical vision that you have developed. We have no limitations in terms of instruments. Basically, every instrument is admissible.

You will be able to compose and arrange music for all kinds of ensembles and orchestras. You can teach others at a music school or privately. Most graduates are self-employed, pursuing "portfolio careers" that combine performance with teaching.
