Energy and Environmental Sciences
SubjectEnvironment, Science
General information
The two-year Master’s degree programme in Energy and Environmental Sciences is connected to the Energy and Sustainability Research Institute Groningen (ESRIG). It has two specializations: System studies on Energy and Environment, and Experimental studies of Energy and Climate. The first specialization has a strong design-orientated, systemsapproach character based in natural sciences. What are the possibilities for a sustainable future for a region or a country? What characterizes the optimal transition routes towards a sustainable future? This specialization is linked to the ESRIG Centre for Energy and Environmental Studies (IVEM). The second specialization is linked to the ESRIG Centre for Isotope Research (CIO) with important contributions from other groups within ESRIG with an experimental, energy-related research programme. It covers a range of research topics such as the enhanced greenhouse effect and the carbon cycle in atmosphere and ocean, gas combustion studies, geo-energy, polymer solar cells, biofuels, climate history. It focuses on experimental methods.
Both paths include a collective part of three compulsory modules and a specialist part. In addition, the programmes include an optional part and two research projects.
Career prospects
Environmental scientists from the University of Groningen are known for their systems-approach and all-round skills. In general they easily obtain jobs in their field of study, and they have careers in science (both university and research institutes), in industry and also in major consultancy firms, governmental agencies and companies.
Admission
Requirements for admission to the Master’s programme Energy and Environmental Sciences include:
A Bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences. For the Experimental studies of Energy and Climate track, a Bachelor’s degree in either Physics or Chemistry is strongly preferred
The Admissions Board will decide wether you can be admitted to the Master’s programme
