Mathematics (BSc)
SubjectMathematics, Science
Is this programme for you?
Maths is your favourite subject at school. You enjoy solving abstract problems. You are fascinated by logic and philosophy and you are intuitive and persevering. University-level Mathematics is not the same as the maths you studied in secondary school. You will recognise some of the things you learned at school, but you will also discover new areas, such as algebra (number theory and coding), dynamic systems (how predictable is the weather?) and systems theory.
Can you predict an economic crisis? How do you determine the optimum dose of a drug? And how do you calculate whether a boat can safely cross an ocean? Are you the type that persists until you have found a well0tiught0out answer? Mathematicians love difficult questions and models underpinned by theoretical foundations.
Why study Mathematics with the University of Groningen?
The University of Groningen offers degree programmes in Mathematics as well as in Applied Mathematics. The first year is largely the same for both degrees, which means you can still switch between them if you wish.
You can choose a specialisation among the following options: General Mathematics (focusing on the foundations of mathematics and comprising three fields of interest: Physics, Mathematics, Logic and Philosophy) or Probability and Statistics.
Mathematics at the University of Groningen is a multifaceted programme. You can take a course or combine your Bachelor's with areas such as Entrepreneurship or Psychology.
You will have the opportunity to study abroad at a number of partner institutions.
