Why study American Studies with the University of Groningen?
The University of Groningen is the only university in the Netherlands to offer an accredited and fully English-taught American Studies programme in The Netherlands.
What distinguishes our degree from all other similar programs is its interdisciplinary nature. The traditional approach focuses on only two perspectives: history and literature. At the University of Groningen, students explore America from a range of perspectives: popular culture, history, literature, politics, economics, religion and race.
During the programme, you will have the opportunity to experience the USA first-hand by spending a semester abroad at one of our exchange partner universities.

American Studies students have expertise in the economic, political, cultural, commercial, and social aspects of the U.S., as well as excellent transferable skills that are highly valued in the job market. The cultural adaptability and linguistic expertise that comes from living and studying in the U.S.A. distinguishes our American Studies students from most job candidates.
After graduation, our students have found jobs in the following fields: journalism, international business, postgraduate research, teaching, diplomacy, media relations, marketing and communications, cultural and arts organisation, politics, law and NGOs.
