Artificial Intelligence
SubjectComputer Science, Science
Course Description
In the Master’s programme Artificial Intelligence (AI) you will learn how to advance the study of brain and cognition by adopting typical AI tools, such as computer simulation, brain-computer interfacing and robotic design.
Unique character
This programme has a unique character, focusing on connections between artificial intelligence and cognitive neuroscience. Understanding how the brain works and how it supports intelligent cognitive behaviour is essential for effective agent design. In turn, agent design can lead to hypotheses about how intelligent behaviour is realised by humans.
Top facilities
The programme is closely related to the research carried out in the internationally renowned Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour. This institute has several unique facilities for brain imaging using EEG, fMRI and MEG. You will be able to use these facilities for developing new experimental research techniques, as well as for developing new machine learning algorithms to analyse the brain data and integrate them with brain-computer interfacing systems. You will also cooperate with the Behavioural Science Institute and work in its Virtual Reality Laboratory, which can be used to study social interaction between humans and avatars.
The programme consists of three tracks
These tracks focus on different areas of natural and artificial intelligence. Apart from these specialisations, a set of foundational courses cover basic techniques for all tracks. Within their different areas of interest, all tracks consist of three main topics; studying natural systems, developing artificial systems and computational models and implementing systems based on these models.
Career prospects
Many of our students go on to perform PhD research in the Netherlands or abroad, filling positions at for instance: the Institute for Computing and Information Sciences (ICIS); the internationally renowned Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour; affiliated institutes of de Donders Institute, such as the Behavioural Science Institute (BSI).
Others go on to perform research in a business environment, or even start their own companies, applying AI techniques in a variety of fields.
