Smart cities, smart mobility, smart industry, smartphones, smart watches... Sensors and their data help us in a number of areas, from health care and sports to agriculture and the energy sector.
The programme has been marked "Top Rated Programme" in The Netherlands for six consecutive years. During the programme, students participate in applied research through the application of sensors in order to develop and improve existing appliances, products and services, for instance, in the fields of healthcare, energy and leisure and robotics. The programme creates professionals with a great understanding of ICT and electronics. All graduates have a large amount of technical knowledge, broad professional skills and entrepreneurial experience, by the time the programme has been completed.
Programme structure
The 240 ECTS Sensor Technology programme consists of four years: one introductory year and a three-year main phase. Each year comprises two semesters. Students attend theoretical classes and a wide range of practical labs. In addition to classroom examination, designing working prototypes, demonstrating them and presenting the design and building process are crucial to accomplishing each semester.
Project group work is also an intrinsic part of each semester, whereby small groups of students work together on tasks. There is a range of about 500 different sensors that students may use to implement in their project work. A practical instructor is present every afternoon to support creative ideas.
Students are also allowed to work independently in our biology, chemistry and electronics/ICT labs.
Students can use 3D printers, laser cutters, PCB milling machine and DNA analyses. The possibilities are endless.

Career prospects
Many of our graduates will be employed in areas where the emphasis is on creating new systems, and therefore, will become R&D or software engineers. A smaller number of graduates become Technical Consultants. Other graduates will become project leaders/engineers or academic researchers. You may even use the entrepreneurial skills you have developed to set up your own company.
Continuing your studies after your Bachelor's programme
Another possibility is to continue with a Mater's programme, like Sensor System Engineering. The Master's programme concentrates on finding relevant information and services in real-time data, moving from a proof of concept to a prototype. See www.hanzegroningen.eu/see for more detailed information.
How to apply
This programme is open to any student with 3 A Levels. If you hold a BTEC Level 3 in a relevant subject, please contact us for further advice.
